Overview
eBay is one of the founding companies of consumer internet commerce, launched by Pierre Omidyar in San Jose, California in September 1995. The first item sold on the platform was a broken laser pointer, purchased by a collector — a sign of things to come for a marketplace that would become the world's largest venue for buying and selling used, rare, and collectible goods, as well as a massive market for new products sold by professional retailers and brands.
eBay's US marketplace is its largest single market, hosting hundreds of millions of live listings at any given moment across virtually every imaginable product category. Unlike Amazon, which is primarily a buy-it-now retail experience, eBay has retained its auction heritage and continues to offer both fixed-price and auction-format listings — a format that is particularly valuable for collectibles, vintage goods, pre-owned electronics, and automotive parts where prices are not easily standardised.
eBay for sellers
The platform hosts an enormous range of sellers — from individuals clearing their homes to professional retailers managing millions of listings. eBay's Seller Hub provides performance analytics, listing management, promotional tools, and inventory management. eBay's Managed Payments system (fully rolled out by 2021) consolidated payment processing onto eBay's own platform, replacing the previous PayPal dependency. Sellers now receive payouts directly to their bank accounts and benefit from eBay's integrated payment experience.
Category strengths
eBay US has particular depth and authority in several categories: automotive parts and accessories (one of the largest auto parts marketplaces in the world), trading cards and collectibles, consumer electronics (especially refurbished and used), fashion (particularly pre-owned and vintage), and industrial and scientific equipment. For brands in these categories, eBay remains a highly relevant channel that complements Amazon and direct-to-consumer strategies.
