Overview

Target Corporation is the seventh-largest retailer in the United States and the second-largest general merchandise discount retailer, operating over 1,950 stores across all 50 states alongside a substantial and rapidly growing e-commerce platform. Founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1902 as Goodfellow Dry Goods and rebranded as Target in 1962, the company has built one of the most recognised and culturally resonant retail brands in America — the iconic red bullseye is among the most recognised brand symbols in the country.

Target's positioning is deliberately distinct from Walmart. While both are large-format, value-focused general merchandise retailers, Target has successfully cultivated an image that feels more design-conscious, more trend-aware, and more aspirational. Target shoppers — who include a disproportionately high share of millennial and Gen Z families — often describe enjoying the Target shopping experience in a way that customers of pure value retailers rarely do. The phrase "I just went in for paper towels" followed by an overstuffed basket is a widely shared cultural experience among Target's core customer base.

Own brands and design partnerships

Target's private label portfolio is one of the most commercially successful in American retail. Brands including Cat and Jack (children's clothing, a billion-dollar business), A New Day (women's fashion), All in Motion (activewear), Threshold (home furnishings), Made By Design (kitchen and home basics), and Good and Gather (food and beverage) have become genuine destinations in their own right. Target has also pursued high-profile design collaborations — with Lilly Pulitzer, Missoni, Hunter, and dozens of other fashion and lifestyle brands — that generate enormous excitement and drive significant foot traffic when they launch.

Target Plus: the marketplace

Target Plus (written as Target+) is Target's curated, invitation-only third-party marketplace on Target.com. Unlike Amazon's open marketplace or Walmart's relatively accessible seller programme, Target+ is highly selective — the company reviews and approves each brand and product before it can be listed. This curation maintains the quality and brand coherence of Target.com and means that an invitation to join Target+ carries genuine commercial significance. Target+ covers home, electronics, sports and outdoors, beauty, apparel, and food and beverage.

Fulfilment and omnichannel

Target has transformed its stores into highly efficient omnichannel fulfilment hubs. More than 95% of Target's digital orders are now fulfilled from stores rather than dedicated warehouses, enabling same-day delivery via Shipt, Drive Up (click-and-collect from the car park in under two minutes for most orders), and Order Pickup in-store. This store-based fulfilment model is significantly more cost-efficient than warehouse-based e-commerce fulfilment and gives Target a genuine operational advantage.

Target Circle and retail media

Target Circle, the company's loyalty programme, has over 100 million members and generates rich first-party purchase data. Target Roundel — the company's retail media network — monetises this data by allowing brands to purchase advertising placements across Target's digital properties and across the broader web using Target's shopper data. Roundel has become one of the most important retail media platforms in the US, competing with Amazon Advertising and Walmart Connect for brand advertising budgets.
