Overview

Bol.com is the leading e-commerce marketplace in the Netherlands and Belgium — the Benelux region — and one of the most important digital retail platforms in Western Europe. Founded in 1999 in the Netherlands as an online bookshop, it rapidly evolved into a full-spectrum marketplace and is now part of the Ahold Delhaize group, one of Europe's largest food and grocery retail conglomerates.

The scale of bol.com in the Dutch market is remarkable. It attracts more than 13 million active customers in a country of 17 million people, making it an almost universal shopping destination. In Belgium, it is the market leader in Flemish e-commerce. For any brand serious about the Benelux market, bol.com is not optional — it is the essential first marketplace to get right.

The seller programme

Bol.com operates an open third-party marketplace alongside its own inventory. Sellers create a bol.com winkel (store) through the Partner Platform and list across all major product categories. Bol.com has a seller onboarding process that includes quality checks — not every applicant is accepted automatically. Logistics via bol.com (LVB) is the platform's fulfilment service: sellers send inventory to bol.com's distribution centres and the platform handles picking, packing, delivery, and returns. LVB products receive higher placement in search results and qualify for same-day and next-day delivery promises.

Categories and strengths

Bol.com is strongest in consumer electronics, books and media, toys and baby products, sports and outdoor, and home and garden. Fashion has grown substantially in recent years. The platform does particularly strong volume around Sinterklaas (early December) — the biggest retail event in the Netherlands — where bol.com dominates the gifting and toy categories in a way that is difficult to overstate.

Advertising

Bol.com's advertising platform featuring Sponsored Products and display placements has matured into an important tool for sellers wanting visibility in competitive categories. As more sellers have joined the platform, paid advertising has shifted from optional to increasingly necessary for strong organic visibility, particularly in high-competition categories like electronics and baby products. For brands entering the Benelux market, getting bol.com right is the single most important marketplace priority.
