Overview
Cdiscount is one of France's largest e-commerce platforms, founded in Bordeaux in 1998 by the Charle brothers and now owned by Casino Group. Cdiscount built its early reputation on offering electronics, appliances, and technology products at deeply discounted prices — the name is essentially a declaration of intent. Over time it evolved into a broad general merchandise marketplace, but its value-focused positioning remains central to its appeal.
France is one of the largest e-commerce markets in Europe, and Cdiscount occupies a clear second-tier position behind Amazon.fr — a meaningful achievement in a market where Amazon has been extremely aggressive. Cdiscount attracts tens of millions of unique visitors monthly and maintains a loyal customer base that values competitive pricing over premium experience.
The marketplace
Cdiscount operates a hybrid model: it sells products directly and also hosts a large third-party marketplace. Third-party sellers list across all categories, with Cdiscount taking a commission on completed sales. The Cdiscount Fulfilment programme allows sellers to use Cdiscount's warehousing and last-mile delivery infrastructure, giving products the fast delivery badge that improves conversion. Cdiscount is particularly strong in consumer electronics, large home appliances, computing, and home goods.
Cdiscount a Volonte (CDAV)
Cdiscount's subscription programme offers members free delivery on eligible orders for a flat annual fee, similar to Amazon Prime. CDAV has a significant subscriber base and members purchase substantially more frequently than non-subscribers, making CDAV eligibility commercially important for sellers. For brands targeting price-sensitive French consumers, Cdiscount remains one of the most important marketplace channels in France.
