Overview
Made.com is a UK furniture and home interiors brand known for design-led, affordable products. The original company went into administration in 2022, and the brand is now owned by the British retailer Next. Made.com sells its own designs, so it is not a channel where other brands can list their products. For furniture brands, it is mainly a competitor to be aware of.
What happened to Made.com
Made.com was founded in London in 2010 by Ning Li and Brent Hoberman. It became known for a direct-to-consumer model that grouped customer orders and commissioned factories to make them, and for letting customers vote on new designs. It listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2021 with a valuation of GBP 775 million, but ran into trouble because of supply chain problems and the cost-of-living crisis. On 09.11.2022 it went into administration, and Next bought the brand name, website and intellectual property for GBP 3.4 million.
Made.com under Next
Next relaunched the Made.com website and app in August 2023 on its Total Platform, the e-commerce and logistics service that Next also runs for brands such as Reiss, Joules and Gap in the UK. Made's team said product availability and sourcing had improved under Next, and Next has opened Made concessions in some of its stores.
What this means for brands
- Made.com sells its own products and does not run a marketplace for other brands.
- Next's Total Platform is a separate service that Next offers to other brands, but it is a business partnership rather than a sales channel.
- For furniture brands, Made.com is a design-led competitor in the UK.
