Overview
Mountain Warehouse is a fast-growing UK outdoor retailer, selling outdoor clothing, footwear and equipment for walking, camping, skiing, running and family activities. It runs more than 400 stores in the UK and abroad and a large online business, which includes a marketplace where third-party brands can sell to its customers. For an outdoor, sports or travel brand, Mountain Warehouse is a strong route to value-focused UK families.
Who is behind Mountain Warehouse
Mountain Warehouse was founded in 1997 by Mark Neale, who is still its chief executive. It is known for value, own-brand products sold under the Mountain Warehouse name. In the year to February 2025, revenue grew 16.4% to a record GBP 449.2 million, and the company reported record profits. It opened 27 new stores and relocated 12 in the UK that year, often into larger stores, including former Topshop and Wilko sites. Mark Neale expects revenue close to GBP 500 million in the following year. Online sales make up nearly a third of the total, and Mountain Warehouse has stores in countries such as Ireland, Germany, Canada, the US, New Zealand and, since 2024, Australia.
The Mountain Warehouse Marketplace
Mountain Warehouse launched its marketplace in 2022, letting third-party sellers list their products on its website next to its own range. By 2024 it had more than 320 brands, and marketplace sales grew more than 150% in a year. The marketplace helps Mountain Warehouse offer a wider range of outdoor and leisure products, while brands gain access to its large and loyal customer base.
How brands can work with Mountain Warehouse
Mountain Warehouse sells mostly its own products, so the marketplace is the main route for other brands. A brand considering the marketplace should be ready with:
- Outdoor, sports, travel or leisure products that complement Mountain Warehouse's own range.
- UK fulfilment and returns, since marketplace sellers ship orders directly to customers.
- Competitive pricing for a value-focused audience.
- Good product content, including technical features such as waterproofing or insulation.
- UK compliance for each category.
Why Mountain Warehouse matters for brands
Mountain Warehouse reaches a large number of UK families who buy outdoor clothing and equipment, both online and in a growing store network. Its marketplace gives outdoor brands access to that audience without needing to be stocked in its stores.
