Amazon Brand Registry is the programme that verifies a brand owns its trademark and then unlocks a set of tools that stay locked to everyone else. Enrolment requires an active registered trademark in each country where you want the protection to apply, which is the requirement that stops most sellers before they start.
The tools behind the gate fall into two groups. One set is about how your listings look and perform, including A+ Content, brand stores and enhanced advertising formats. The other is about defending the listings you already have, mainly through faster routes for reporting counterfeits and hijacked listings.
What Brand Registry actually unlocks
| Tool |
What it does |
| A+ Content |
Replaces the plain text product description with image modules and comparison charts |
| Brand store |
A multi-page storefront on Amazon showing your full catalogue in one place |
| Sponsored Brands |
Ad formats carrying your logo and several products, beyond what unbranded sellers can run |
| Listing content control |
Your submitted titles, images and bullets take priority over edits from other sellers on the same listing |
| IP reporting tools |
Faster routes for reporting counterfeit listings and trademark violations than the standard seller process |
| Brand analytics |
Search term and competitive data that unenrolled sellers cannot see |
The listing content control matters more than it sounds. On a shared listing, sellers can edit product information, and a competitor or reseller changing your title or swapping an image is a genuine problem. Enrolment gives your version priority.
The trademark requirement, market by market
Brand Registry runs on trademarks, and trademarks are national. A registered US trademark covers you for the US marketplace. It does nothing for Germany, where you need an EU or German registration, and nothing for the UK, which has been a separate trademark jurisdiction since Brexit.
This turns Brand Registry into a sequencing problem for brands expanding internationally. Trademark applications take months to years depending on the office and whether anyone opposes them, so a brand planning to sell in the EU next year should have filed already. Selling into a market where you hold no trademark means operating there without A+ Content, without a brand store, and without the faster counterfeit reporting route, while competitors who filed earlier have all three.
What Brand Registry does not do
It does not create trademark rights. Amazon verifies a registration that already exists; it does not grant one, and enrolment carries no legal weight outside Amazon.
It also does not stop counterfeits appearing. What it changes is the speed and the route for getting them removed once you find them, which still requires somebody actively monitoring listings. Brands sometimes enrol expecting the problem to stop and find that the monitoring work is still theirs.
What brands get wrong with Brand Registry
- Filing the trademark too late. Registration timelines run months at minimum. Treating it as a step to handle at launch rather than well before it leaves early sales running without any of the tools.
- Assuming one registration covers every marketplace. Each jurisdiction needs its own, and the gap between a US filing and an EU one is where expansion plans stall.
- Enrolling and then not using the tools. Enrolment alone changes nothing. A+ Content has to be built, the store has to be designed, and the analytics have to be read.
- Expecting it to police the marketplace for you. The reporting tools work well once a violation is found. Finding violations remains a job somebody has to own.
FAQ
Do I need a registered trademark for Brand Registry?
Yes. An active registered trademark is the core requirement, and it has to be registered in the country whose Amazon marketplace you want the protection to apply to. A pending application generally is not enough.
Does a US trademark cover Amazon in Europe?
No. Trademarks are national or regional. Enrolling for Amazon Germany needs an EU or German registration, and the UK needs its own. Each marketplace is gated by the trademark covering that jurisdiction.
Does Brand Registry stop counterfeit sellers?
It speeds up removal rather than preventing listings appearing. The reporting tools are faster and more direct than the standard process, but somebody still has to monitor listings and submit the reports.
