Pick and Pack

Pick and pack is the part of order fulfilment where somebody collects the items in a customer order from their storage locations, then boxes them for shipment. Picking is the collection, packing is the preparation, and together they account for most of what a fulfilment provider charges per order.

It sounds mechanical and mostly is, which is exactly why it rewards attention. Small changes in how picking is organised have an outsized effect on cost, because the step repeats on every single order.

Picking methods

Method How it runs Where it suits
Single order One picker walks the route for one order at a time Low volume, or large orders that fill a trolley on their own
Batch Several orders picked in one pass, then separated at a packing station High volumes of small orders with overlapping items
Zone Each picker covers one area, and orders pass between zones Large facilities where walking the whole floor is the bottleneck
Wave Orders released in scheduled groups, usually around carrier cut-offs Operations working to fixed collection times

Most providers use some combination rather than one method exclusively. The common thread is reducing how far a picker walks per item, since walking is the single largest consumer of time in a manual operation.

How pick and pack is charged

Fulfilment pricing usually separates the first item in an order from the rest. A base pick fee covers the order, then each additional item costs less, because the walking was already done. Packing materials are sometimes bundled and sometimes billed separately, which makes quotes harder to compare than they look.

This structure has a practical consequence. Two orders with the same total units cost different amounts depending on how they are grouped, so anything that encourages customers to buy more items in one order improves fulfilment economics as well as revenue.

Why accuracy matters more than speed

A mispick is expensive in a way the fulfilment invoice never shows. The wrong item ships, the customer requests a return, you pay return shipping, somebody processes the item back into stock, the correct item ships at full cost again, and support handles the conversation throughout.

That sequence costs several times the original pick fee. It is also the kind of failure that produces reviews, which is why pick accuracy rates belong in a fulfilment contract alongside the per-order price.

What brands get wrong with pick and pack

  • Comparing providers on the base pick fee alone. Additional item rates, packing materials and cut-off times change the real cost more than the headline number does.
  • Ignoring accuracy rates. A cheaper provider with a worse mispick rate costs more once returns and replacements are counted.
  • Packaging that fights the process. Items that need unusual handling or custom assembly slow packing down and attract surcharges.
  • Treating it as fully separate from storage. How stock is organised in the facility determines how far pickers walk, which is most of the cost.

FAQ

What does pick and pack mean?
Collecting the items in a customer order from their storage locations, then packing them into a shipment. It is the most labour-intensive step in fulfilment and the main driver of per-order cost.

How is pick and pack priced?
Typically a base fee for the order plus a smaller charge for each additional item, since the walking has already been done. Packing materials may be included or billed separately, which is worth checking when comparing quotes.

Why do mispicks matter so much?
Because the cost extends well past the error. Return shipping, processing the item back into stock, shipping the correct one and handling the support conversation together cost several times the original pick fee.

Pick accuracy, cut-off times and per-order cost are what separate a cheap fulfilment quote from a good one. eBrands manages that operation for the brands we run. See how our fulfilment operation works.
